One of the best books I have read in a long time!

In the Land of Invisible Women: A Female Doctor's Journey in the Saudi KingdomIn the Land of Invisible Women: A Female Doctor’s Journey in the Saudi Kingdom by Qanta A. Ahmed

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I guess you either love this book or hate it. I loved it. It was one of the best books I have read in a while. I love all the detail and I didn’t feel like it dragged on and on about the same thing. I was fascinated with every single part of the culture in Saudi Arabia. I loved reading about all of her adventures with the Saudi people. I would highly recommend this book.

Our friend Harry

Nate was doing some yard work {excuse the disgusting dirty hands} and found this little guy:

I thought he was pretty cute! I decided to name him Harry. I think it is easy to see why.

I took Kobe with me to my mom’s house tonight to help us can apple pie filing and green beans. (Beautiful combination right?) He was such a fantastic helper. Nothing really sticks out but it was just so nice to have him with me and to have him be the only kids with me. I have not had the opportunity to be the mom of just one kid so it just feels so insanely easy to have just one. I know parents of only children probably are blacklisting me right now but truly it just felt so good and I didn’t feel like I was being pulled in three different directions. It was just nice.

It’s Harvest Time!

This year my garden has yielded an odd bounty. We have potatoes, carrots, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, cantacumberloupe, apples, strawberries, tomatoes, raspberries, wax beans, and onions.

At the beginning of the season I planted some mounded cantaloupes but they never did anything or so I thought. So we flattened the mounds and tilled it up a bit and planted wax beans. The wax beans went wild! The cucumbers never seemed to do very well until all the sudden at the end of July and into August they just went insane-o! Well I was digging around in the cucumbers and found this:

It can only be described as a cross between my pickling cucumbers and a cantaloupe. I have been keeping an eye on it and it doesn’t appear to be getting any bigger. I am planning on going out and picking it tomorrow if it still has not grown. The outside is spiky like the cucumbers but perfectly round like a cantaloupe. It’s the most bizarre thing. Almost as bizarre as the random boosh of basil I found growing in my garden last week!

Anyway, the cantacumberloupe obviously steals the show but here are some other things I have going on in my back yard:

Tomatoes out the wazoo! At the time of the picture this glorious red beast was happily attached to the boosh. Since the time of photography and now it has been gobbled by a tomato loving boy. {Kobe}

Baby onions because I planted them too close together and forgot to thin them out! I have thinned them now but I don’t know if they will continue to grow. Lesson learned. Dually noted.

Wax beans! I have so many wax beans! It’s insane. I pick about a pound or more each day. So far I have made dilly beans and bagged some up for the freezer so I can steam them at some point. Wax beans are quite tasty. I actually picked up the seeds to do a science project with the kids but they ended up in the garden.

Gorgeous apples. This is a Sweet Sixteen apple tree that we planted last year. Usually it wouldn’t bear fruit this soon but we have babied it and loved on it and hugged and kissed it goodnight without fail every single night  -anyway- we have 9 apples that are just begging to be plucked. I don’t think they are ready though. I have big plans for those 9 apples!

So there you go – you have had a grand tour of the estate. Please come back soon!

Beautiful Moments Blogged

September 4, 2011

I thought today’s beautiful moment was going to be watching Javien mutton bustin’ at the rodeo but instead it came along surprisingly in the evening after we got home. There were so many moments today that were easily bloggable. Tonight we ate dinner and sent a certain crabtastic little girl to bed early. The boys went out to play knowing that bedtime was coming and that if they fight it would expedite bedtime. Anyway, I went out to my car to get my camera and I could hear the boys in the backyard on the trampoline playing “buckin’ buffalo riders” – I had to just smile. It’s so cute to see my boys playing together like brothers. Those moments are fleeting (very) for them so to hear this little moment was very special for me.

Day 2 – September 2, 2011

Today’s beautiful moment was watching the little boy I take care of (he’s 1) clap in near perfect time to the toddler tunes channel. He was delighted by something so simple. Something so easy. He was so happy to just move and dance to the music. Best of all he has no inhibitions like older kids and adults do. He was just shakin’ his little diaper tooshie and rockin’ the toddler tunes. Very cute. It made me smile more than once through the day!

Hoopin’ It Up!

I am going to try to blog more often – like a lot more often. Maybe even more than once a day!  I intend for most of my posts to be set up ahead of time so I am not actually blogging several times a day. I am really a very busy woman. With that said – most people are busy. I make time to blog and play on Facebook because I enjoy it. I am a full-time college student, a mom to three high energy, high needs children, wife to a high energy working husband, I take care of a 1-year-old Monday-Friday, and I still have to find some time for me. Believe me I am busy.

I am trying to get healthier in the way I eat and in my activity level. I have tried running but it was extremely painful for me. I know it always is but I did stick with it for quite some time and it got past the point of good hurting. It was miserable. I have tried exercising but I just don’t like to exercise. I had heard about hooping but I couldn’t hoop. Not even as a child with those silly plastic hoops. Then I just decided I was going to give it an honest try to make my own hoops. Well guess what folks – I can hoop. And I am getting pretty good at it . I have fun hooping. My abs burn like no other but it’s a good deep muscle ache. I love it!

Christine from Welcome To My Brain issued a challenge to hoop for 30 minutes a day for the 30 days in September. Well I joined the bandwagon. So far so good. I am one day into it. It’s good, clean, healthy, and it’s fun. My kids are getting into it with my and Javien was really hooping right along with me – we laughed until we dropped our hoops and then we laughed some more. With the way things have going I can just say we – he AND I – together – needed this laughter. We needed something that we could laugh at together and it felt aaaa-mazing! I am waiting to hoop today when he gets home from school because it is so much fun to hoop with him!

I call this picture: “Peace, Love, Hoopin”
